True North Is On Fire

The 2012 True North Conference: Almighty had just ended. It ended great enough to ignite a fire for a country longing for love! One message that was very clear from beginning to the end of the conference is the need for God to be almighty in our lives. He has to be the first and only reason if we are to experience greatness in all areas of our lives.  Our spiritual True North is embracing us, calling us by name and a response is needed. Response we did! We are on fire and we will be burning with the fire of Christ!

We have experienced a mountain top experience, it is now time to go down and proclaim. Let us proclaim the greatness of the Lord in all areas of Canada and beyond. Let us set the world on fire with Christ love! Let us be a witness of love and compassion to a wounded generation. Let us be a healing presence to a world full of suffering. Let us be a compass to the lost, the least and the last.  Let us be a guide for others to the one ALMIGHTY TRUE NORTH, OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST!

One great affirmation came from Father Dominic, our priest presider at the Friday mass, upon seeing a vast number of young people, he said “For you, this is just a regular affair, but for me this is a miracle!”

The conference has been offered, go and proclaim the Almighty!

Life is Beautiful With Jesus

I am in the middle of the 2012 True North Conference of Canada, a national conference of CFC Youth. Delegates came from different provinces of Canada. They came by plane, bus, and car. Delayed flights, bus stuck for hours without air-condition and days of long drive did not dampened the spirit but instead it stimulated them the more, knowing that it is a spiritual battle.  From east to west young people excitedly came to worship and glorify God, listen and respond to talks, attend workshops, and join competitions.

What an almighty experience with an almighty God! The conference is not yet over but the cup of our hearts is filled already with messages of affirmation from the Lord! Our God is almighty enough to banish all fears and anxieties and we were just overwhelmed of the splendor of His blessings and assurance that actually arouses us to respond to the splendor of His mission.

This conference is a glimpse of heaven. Being with fellow brothers and sisters, singing and worshiping God is such an awesome sight. Life is beautiful with Jesus!

Sensing the Spirit

It is very important to sense the Spirit, where it is leading us and what it wants us to do. Not being able to sense it may mean a certain blessing passing us by. When your time has come and you are able to recognize and respond to it, great things happen.

It Is Not Just Your Priority

I don't mostly buy reason such us "I really do love to go to the conference Kuya, but I don't have money!" (Except for those few very valid reasons.) If you had bought gadgets, have some awesome phone plans, spend some few bucks on Timmys for a year, having no money going to a conference is no reason at all. Imagine saving even just a dollar a day for 365 days? Simple reason, it is not just your priority.

Another line I don’t usually buy, “I really do love to go to the conference Kuya but I am camping with friends and we scheduled it way before.” Conference schedule is announced way ahead.  No, you don’t love to go to the conference. Your priority speaks what and who, you value in life.

If you really love to go to the conference, you will not just desire for it but prepare for it.

If you are not YFC, it’s just fine, nothing to lose but if you are YFC you are indeed missing a lot.

*YFC usually goes to a conference and pays for its registration.

A Piece of Heaven

Ezekiel 34:13-14

In the book of the Prophet Ezekiel, the Lord said, “I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries and bring them to their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the streams, and in all the inhabited places of the land. I will feed them in a good pasture, and their grazing ground will be on the mountain heights of Israel. There they will lie down on good grazing ground and feed in rich pasture on the mountains of Israel.”

Those who are weary, hungry, lonely, sad, outcast and burdened will find joy and peace in God. He is leading them to real joy and peace. There they will no longer be weary, they will have acceptance, they will find real friends, and they will no longer be hungry nor lonely.

A promise so beautiful to hold on to, knowing that He can be trusted. It is also actually paints a glimpse of heaven. A place of good pasture, lands were good memories abound and a secured dwelling place.

In our own little way, may we be a piece of heaven for someone.

There Is No Such Thing As Busy

Last month we had summer training for top leaders of YFC*. We had one brother who booked off his work, rode a bus for 6 hours with money from his own pocket just to attend a 5-day stay-in training. We had seen this played countless times in different situations. On the other hand we have leaders also who are just near, don’t even need to book off their work and yet always giving us excuses that they are busy. One excuse after another just so not to attend but if they only see the value of it they will regret the opportunity wasted. If we are really interested we will find a way. There is no such thing as busy for someone who has passion for something.

Lord, may we have passion enough not make excuses in attending your activities. Amen.

Role as a Prophet

Christians shares the Kingly, Priestly and Prophetic role of Christ. By being a priest we are to be a vessel of holiness and an example for others to follow in Christ, while being a king we are to be a good leader and provider for a world in need of direction. The prophetic role on other hand drives us to be the voice of truth in the world of lies.

Reflecting further on our role as a prophet reaffirms us that we have to tell the truth about Christ. There will be times when we will be put in very uncomfortable situations and we need to stand up on what we believe in. We cannot be just someone who wants to please everybody. There are opportunities were we can actually proclaim the greatness of God through our actions but at times we shrink, “we don’t want to rock the boat,” because we are afraid to:

1.    Lose power
2.    Lose money
3.    Lose friends

Confronted with the possibility of losing power, thereby losing influence, we shrink. Overcome with greed for more, we cling on to money and the possibility of losing it makes us a coward. Fearful of losing friends we choose to be silent for the sake of peace.

But being a prophet means to be true to who we are. Deep within us, is always that desire to do something good. It is wired in us. From the beginning we were created to be good and thereby to do good for others. We can never be other than that. So we have to summon all courage in us so the goodness can come out and overcome the evil in us. When we will be in position of power, we will be in the best position to affect change for good and we will have the ears of the people to listen for what is true. When we will have money we will have every opportunity to help those in need. When we will lose friends we will actually find the real ones. Real friends are honest to each other.

Lord, grant us the courage to be the voice of truth in the world of lies. Amen.

Love and Serve

I attended last week the Clergy and Lay Congress organized by Couples For Christ. One of the presentations there was the video about the mission of the community together with the local churches all over the world where CFC is present. What caught my attention was the background music used in the audio visual presentation. It was the chant “Amare et Servire” (Love and Serve) a shorten Latin form of Saint Ignatius “In Omnibus Amare, In Omnibus Servire” which means “In Everything Love, In Everything, Serve”.

Very simple phrase yet speaks so much truth and beauty of real Christian life. This sums up what every Christian should do! This has to be our posture towards others whenever, wherever or however we are. Very inspiring indeed! Love without service is like a body with a mouth but without a colon. Service without love on the other hand is like a body without a soul. It is just for a show. The fruit of love can never be but service. When we are in love, service becomes self-giving and inspiring. Love inspires us to serve! Real service comes from a loving heart and a loving heart comes from a deep relationship with a loving God.

Lord, teach us to love like you so we can serve like you. Amen.

Destination: True North

The great Pope John Paul 2 once said, "It is Jesus that you seek when you dream of happiness; He is waiting for you when nothing else you find satisfies you; He is the beauty to which you are so attracted; it is He who provoked you with that thirst for fullness that will not let you settle for compromise; it is He who urges you to shed the masks of a false life; it is He who reads in your heart your most genuine choices, the choices that others try to stifle.

It is Jesus who stirs in you the desire to do something great with your lives, the will to follow an ideal, the refusal to allow yourselves to be ground down by mediocrity, the courage to commit yourselves humbly and patiently to improving yourselves and society, making the world more human and more fraternal."

Reflecting on these beautiful words eloquently said by the Pope makes me want to do more for the mission. There is something in each one of us that longs for the One who created us. We are somehow wired to yearn, as if we are not complete without it. And, St. Augustine pointed it so well, by saying, “my heart finds no rest until it rest in you.”

Only in Jesus

Only in Jesus can our longing be quenched. Only He can satisfy every yearning that we have. Hearing so many young people sharing about their lives, their frustrations and passions, their ups and downs, their joys and sadness, I can’t help but be affirmed of that connection to the One true source of all that is needed in a world that is thirsty of real love.

Our world today offers a different reality. It says, that what makes a young person happy is by having material things as many as he can have. And yet we have seen in our young people, not satisfied with what they have. After having an Ipod, they long to have another new one. After having a car, they want another new one. It seems that the hunger cannot be quenched. Relationship after another relationships, they come and go and end up more broken than ever, because the meaning of having relationships had been watered down so low. It just means, using one another instead of building up. They remain unhappy, unsatisfied, because, true joy cannot just be found on these things, artificial and passing things, but only by anchoring themselves to Christ.

Blessed Mother Theresa of Calcutta describes our modern situation by saying, “The loneliness of Jesus, the pain and the suffering of Jesus in Gethsemane that cause perspiration of blood, I think that was much greater than even the crucifixion itself. Crucifixion was temporary on the flesh but the agony of the loneliness, the agony of being rejected, being left alone cause that perspiration of blood and I think today we see that loneliness being relived in many many rich countries, that people are going to a torture of being unwanted, rejected. And I think that is the greatest suffering, the greatest poverty today.”

Today, young people are hungry for love and compassion, of acceptance and care, of genuine relationships. We are to give Jesus to the world!

Northern Lights

I am always fascinated by lights, when I read encyclopedia, I am always in awe of the northern lights or what we call the ‘aurora borealis”. It is such a beautiful sight to behold. It reminds me of our true light. We have more than the northern lights here. If in Canada we have the northern lights, we are blessed to be reminded of our true light, Jesus Christ.  Let us all point other young people to the light, in the midst of darkness, of gloom, of feeling unwanted and unloved, rejected and alone.  Jesus is our hope and light that will guide us.

Unite Canada

In the history of nation building of Canada, there was always a challenge of uniting the Atlantic side from the Pacific, so what Prime Minister Macdonald did, was to build the Trans Pacific railway that will connect the Atlantic coast to the pacific. This has contributed immensely in unifying the country. Today, it is our challenge to build a new human railway that will connect Atlantic to the Pacific, with the bond of love and then we can ignite the whole country on fire for the love of mission! Let us be that railway!

True North

As YFCs in this country, let us share Jesus, our true source of joy. Canada is blessed not just because it is a first world country, but because it has a first world Christians who are not just aware of what is happening but is actually doing something.

I love history and researching on Canada I found out that it is also known by its nickname “true north”. It is even in the national anthem, ‘true north strong and free”. Canada is the True North. True North is where the compass points to, for the ship to arrive correctly and safely at its destination. We also have our True North, Jesus Christ! God must be so in love with our country that He puts that true north in our land, so that we will always be reminded of our mission. True North is in Canada! Jesus Christ is in Canada! Let us be that compass that will point other youth to that True North.

With our true light Jesus Christ, let us journey together with passion and conviction; let us proclaim Gods love with boldness and sense of urgency. Let us work us one Canada by building that new human railway of love. Let us be that compass that will point others to the One True North. And in the end we will be able to arrive to our true destination, Jesus Christ our True North.

One Canada! One Destination! TRUE NORTH!

Maintenance Mentality Versus Expansion Mentality

In mission we don’t think of hiring FTPWs (Fulltime Pastoral Workers)* based on the number of community members of the areas to be sustained because it is a limiting consideration. The implication of this kind of mentality is that we are just hiring to maintain the same number of members. No. When we develop and hire missionaries it is because we want to expand and enlarge the territory of the Lord. We must have a vision much bigger than what we have in the present. In this way we can grow. We have to have an expansion mentality rather than a maintenance mentality. Jesus commanded us, Go and proclaim the good news not stay and proclaim the good news.

Being Lost

The worst thing about being lost is that no one is actually trying to find you. May those who are lost have someone looking for them.  Amen.

A Missionary Never Stops Learning

A missionary should never stop learning. The more we grow in years in mission the more we should strive to learn and re-learn. We cannot afford to be rusty along the way. Read and reflect, asks questions and search for answers. Train the mind and heart. Growing in years is never an excuse from learning more. Magkadugay dapat magkadako ang ka-alam. Habang tumatanda dapat lalong lumalim ang kaalaman.
