What Will We Choose?

The gospel reading for Holy Tuesday was taken John 13:21-33, 36-38. It tells the story of Jesus predicting the betrayal of Judas, the denial and abandonment of Peter and in fact if we go further with the story, most of them abandoned him.

I cannot imagine enough the pain of being betrayed, denied and abandoned. I think this is worst than crucifixion itself. Nothing can be crueler than being betrayed, denied and abandoned by the person you love the most. Can there be worst situation than these happening at the very moment of in dire need? Truly we will know our real friends when dark night of trials comes.

The good thing about God is that even in the darkest nights of betrayal, denial and abandonment, He can still turn it into an opportunity to choose what is good. Jesus chose to continue the mission. He chose to love. In that same night, Jesus turned betrayal, denial and abandonment into salvation.

Judas and Peter both made mistakes, the first chose to wallow in despair while Peter chose to repent. What about us, what will we choose?

Peanut Breakthrough

BBC reported a great breakthrough on peanuts allergy treatment. According to BBC World News, “Researchers in Cambridge believe they've made a breakthrough in developing a potential treatment for peanut allergy. They carried out a trial where 100 children ate gradually increased doses of peanut protein each day. After six months, 84% were able to eat up to five nuts a day without feeling ill.”

Giving them peanuts were actually good, they said! What a breakthrough! Well, our ancestors before were able to handle allergies already. I remember the elder people in my town when I was young, allowing us to eat the food (including peanuts) that we were allergic of (gradually) so we will get used to it. Science sometimes really doesn’t need to look further to study. All they need is just to look back and learn from those who had found it already. Sometimes the mind really can be a hindrance to the solutions. Imagine, after all these years, science finally found out this breakthrough when this was already practiced way before?

Nature is giving us the solutions and the ways of life of our ancestors are telling us something about wellness. Not everything old is bad, we should open our mind to the past if only to look at the right solutions that they already made. We can always learn from the wisdom of those who had been there.
